District 7610 News

Rotary Leadership Institute will be held Saturday, March 17 in Fairfax, VA.

RLI is a series of three one day discussion seminars for regular Rotarians to enhance their Rotary experience by sharing their questions or knowledge with other Rotarians from other clubs and districts. While the focus of the events are key topics in Leadership, Service, and Membership, most Rotarians agree that the most valuable aspect is building better friendships with other participants and taking back new ideas for their own club.

The District 7610 RLI Chair is Steve Radich. You can contact him with any questions regarding RLI at email stever@bitshop.com, or see the D7610 http://www.rotary7610.org/RLI.html.

President's Message
Kenneth Courter
Good Day,

Sorry I missed the meeting on March 15th.  I was in Richmond picking up the approval for an Historical Marker to honor the life of Margaret Mercer.  This project has taken two years to tackle.  St. David’s Church & School intends to erect a marker to the Belmont Chapel ruins and the lasting memory of our founder Margaret Mercer.  Our community has a rich history that has been hidden beneath the bulldozers that built Ashburn as we know it.

On Friday I heard from a fellow Rotarian who attended and shared with me how much they learned about the services available to Veterans in our county.  Within the County Family Services Department we have vital services to help our Vets.

What I enjoyed, on hearing what I missed, was that a feature of Rotary is to discover and learn how we can help people in need.  Our collective knowledge continues to expand as we discover public and private services.  Let’s continue to be active and engaged.

See you on Thursday,

Ken Courter, President, Rotary Club of Ashburn, VA

Clean Water Project
The Rotary Club of Ashburn is raising funds to bring clean water to Ghana in West Africa.

The boreholes in Zuarungu Torson and Wakii in the Bolgatanga Municipal district is estimated to serve a combined 850 people. Rotary global grant 17-57675 will provide communities with clean water and sanitation with improved hygiene in the Bolgatanga area of the Upper East Region in Ghana.

Our goal is to provide communities with twenty-three boreholes (deep wells), three small town water systems and two hundred and seventy-five new Microflush toilets with hand washing sinks. The new Microflush toilets will be provided to schools and homes to increase awareness and use of the new sanitation technology. We also want to develop training videos and materials to teach new Microflush toilet makers. The project budget is $200,000. The result of not having access to clean drinking water can caused widespread disease resulting in the inability for those affected to work or support themselves. The project is anticipated to begin in summer 2018 through finish in 2019.

The Four-Way Test

The Four-Way Test is a nonpartisan and nonsectarian ethical guide for Rotarians to use for their personal and professional relationships. The test has been translated into more than 100 languages, and Rotarians recite it at club meetings:

Of the things we think, say or do

  1. Is it the TRUTH?
  2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
  3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
  4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
