Richmond Politics and our Community

David A. Reid (born January 14, 1962 in Lexington, Virginia) is an American politician and retired US Navy Reserve Commander. Reid was elected to the Virginia House of Delegates in 2017. He is a Democrat representing the 32nd District, which includes much of eastern Loudoun County in Northern Virginia. Reid grew up in poverty in Rockbridge County, Virginia, before moving to the United Methodist Children’s Home in Richmond, Virginia in 1972. After six years, Reid and his youngest brother were adopted and moved to Tahlequah, Oklahoma with a foster family. Reid is the first person in his family to graduate from college. David and his wife were married in 1993 and have lived in Broadlands, Virginia since February 2000.

Nowhere to Turn:  As thousands of refugees streamed into Berlin, they strained the health care system. Rotarian and physician Pia Skarabis-Querfeld spent the last three years building a network of volunteer doctors to help those in need.  Read more about this program

President's Message
Kenneth Courter

Good Day,

I predict 71 degrees and rain on Thursday.  This should certainly not keep us from our appointed rounds as good Rotarians.  The speaker is State Delegate David Reid.  He will provide us on the news from Richmond.  Please attend and learn how this impacts your business and family here in Ashburn.  He won a huge election against an incumbent last November.

My one year as President is winding down.  I have found this personally rewarding and fun to work with you.  If I can do this so can you!  Run for office, volunteer and head up a committee, make Rotary magic happen here and around the world.

Thanks for being the very best Club in Virginia.

Ken

See you on Thursday,

Ken Courter, President, Rotary Club of Ashburn, VA

Ashburn Rotary Blood Drive
Clean Water Project
The Rotary Club of Ashburn is raising funds to bring clean water to Ghana in West Africa.

The boreholes in Zuarungu Torson and Wakii in the Bolgatanga Municipal district is estimated to serve a combined 850 people. Rotary global grant 17-57675 will provide communities with clean water and sanitation with improved hygiene in the Bolgatanga area of the Upper East Region in Ghana.

Our goal is to provide communities with twenty-three boreholes (deep wells), three small town water systems and two hundred and seventy-five new Microflush toilets with hand washing sinks. The new Microflush toilets will be provided to schools and homes to increase awareness and use of the new sanitation technology. We also want to develop training videos and materials to teach new Microflush toilet makers. The project budget is $200,000. The result of not having access to clean drinking water can caused widespread disease resulting in the inability for those affected to work or support themselves. The project is anticipated to begin in summer 2018 through finish in 2019.

The Four-Way Test

The Four-Way Test is a nonpartisan and nonsectarian ethical guide for Rotarians to use for their personal and professional relationships. The test has been translated into more than 100 languages, and Rotarians recite it at club meetings:

Of the things we think, say or do

  1. Is it the TRUTH?
  2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
  3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
  4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
